The beginnings of the Car Camp Company happened when two outdoor buddies got together on a drizzly Seattle Saturday morning in 2018 to build a sleeping platform for one of their cars - a 2012 Toyota Prius V.

Both were competent carpenters, but even with years of amateur woodworking under their belts and decently sketched dimensions, this type of project was new to both, causing multiple trips to the hardware store before they even started. The final result turned out to be a functional car camping kit, but of course a few lessons were learned: the task was harder than expected (drawers and math are hard!), and with a little more experience and finer wood products, a grander car camping kit would be possible and really sing.

That first summer of adventuring with that simple build was eventful. The founder and his fiance’ found sleeping comfortably in the car was a much better experience than a tent. Trips were also more enjoyable because all their regular camping / outdoor gear was organized and easily accessible (where’s that damn headlamp!) into the nooks and crannies of the build. Cooking and cocktailing on the pull-out drawers became a staple of each adventure. Just as importantly, there was money to be saved on gas by having everything packed into the car as opposed to stacked on top or dragging behind. Finally, the occasional nighttime relief no longer required loud tent zippers upsetting the peaceful night.

It’s because of this simpler summer filled with gin and tonics and deep sleeps that The Car Camp Company went from a fun idea to something more. We believe that everyone should be able to have an amazing overnight experience with exactly what they have right now - especially if that’s a car with enough space to sleep in.

We’re not overly accomplished mountaineers, #vanlifers or vagabonds on the road all year - we’re just folks who enjoy being outside on the weekends who don’t want to spend a fortune to get the best of it.

If you feel the same way, that’s awesome. We hope one of our products fits what you’re looking for, and are excited to see what you do and where you go with it ( ya know, #carcampcompany).
